Team Vs. Club:

The Equestrian team at New Paltz is considered to be a “club sport” which means that you can participate in club activities without the pressures of showing! Everyone is encouraged to show, and riders of all skill levels are accepted. The team competes in the IHSA (Intercollegiate Horse Show Association) and there are 5 divisions for different level riders.

Where do we ride?

Lucky C Stables is located just 10 minutes outside of campus and is the home of the Hawks. Owners Susan and Gary Clark coach and assist the team in all of their riding and showing activities. Weekly Team Ride is held on Thursdays at 6pm for members who compete in shows.

Fun Fact: Don’t drive? No problem! Returning team members are always willing to drive those without vehicles

What does it cost?

There are several different options of payment for lessons. For riders who ride once a week and participate in team ride lessons are $45 and $15 for team ride. A 10 week lesson card with the barn is $450(price subject to change). If you purchase the semester card, this card includes the amount of weekly lessons plus the price of team ride for riders who ride once a week. For those who ride twice a week (required for riders who jump in shows) the price for the lesson card will include two lessons per week and the cost of team ride for the given amount of riding weeks in the semester.

The Spring Semester prices are as follows:

-$650 to ride once a week including Team Ride for 13 weeks

-$1050 to ride twice a week including Team Ride for 13 weeks.

I don’t own riding gear!

Fear not! The team has a good relationship with Green Valley Tack and take trips out as a team to buy new gear! A boot with a definite heel and a riding helmet are required for all lessons. The standard lesson uniform requires a polo shirt (any color) and breeches. From boots to breeches, helmets and show clothes, you’ll be able to find everything you need at the tack shop.

Fun Fact: Starving college student? Odds are there is an existing team member who has extra clothes and gear they would be willing lend out!

Where are the shows?

Most of the shows are located in New Jersey and there are a few located locally. We are located in Zone 3 Region 3 and all shows are with other schools in the region.

How many shows are there?

There are generally about 6-7 shows in the fall and 2-3 in the spring.

Who do we ride in shows?

Riders will ride the horses that are provided by the facility - sometimes we bring horses depending on the need for them.

Do you ride them beforehand?

No. Riders are expected to mount a horse they may have never ridden before. Schooling riders school the horses so they are ready to go when we get on!

How much are shows?

The classes are $45 per class for a max of two classes (flat and fences) so the max cost is $90 per show. After a year of membership the team covers show costs!

Are there try-outs?

There are try-outs at the beginning of each semester. This is often a placement lesson to see where you will fit in in the shows and in lessons. All levels of riding from trails to jumpers are welcome!
